Floating Toolbar

This is a design exploration I created for a floating toolbar when using the phone remoting feature in the Your Phone app on Windows. With this particular feature, there are some unique design challenges. Since the phone mirror window can be “popped out” of the main app window, the toolbar needs to move along with the phone mirror window. However, it also needs to be discreet and only present itself when necessary.

I decided to pop out the toolbar as a separate entity to the phone mirror window, but have it snap to eight different positions both around the outside of the window and within the window. When the toolbar is inside the phone mirror window, it collapses after not being interacted with, taking up a smaller footprint on top of the phone screen.

I built this concept in ProtoPie, which allowed me to interact with the toolbar and react to it. After that, I created the motion study for use in a presentation.
